Not your ordinary Rabbit Food Diet: The Glycemic Index Diet Likes Protein Too
Tired of munching on nothing but salads all day? Rabbit food diets are healthy and low fat but they can get boring very fast. Despite the high levels of phyto-nutrients and anti-oxidants a greens only diet is just not sustainable for most people.
Same is true of the opposite diet, the Adkins no carb diets. After a while you start to fantasize for a green salad to go with your steak. It turns out that while either approach will work, at least for a while they are both doomed to failure.
Why, because they are just not sustainable. We want a greater variety of foods in our diet, and eventually all but the most highly motivated will find a way to justify a breach in the regimen and soon the entire effort fades away.
Luckily, the first scientifically proven approach to weight loss, the glycemic index diet permits both carbs and protein, and get this, – you can even have fats!
The glycemic index diet ranks the food with carbohydrates by how fast a certain food is turned into glucose of blood sugar by the body. Foods that are digested quickly cause a spike in blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar gets above a certain level, you body normalizes itself by storing the excess as fat.
This process is independent of the amount of calories in the food, although the more there are the more that needs to be stored away. What is important is how fast the blood sugar is released into your blood stream.
Some foods take longer to digest and these foods disperse more slowly into the blood stream avoiding the sharp spike and thus don’t get sent to the fat storerooms. It turn out that proteins don’t effect this process. That is one of the reason the Adkins approach works.
The difference with the glycemic index diet is that you can eat tons of low glycemic vegetables and and thus have a nice variety with your meat and or other protein sources.
Now a moderate amount of good sense needs to be added to the meat intake, often neglected by some Adkins followers. Excess fat is still not good for you. And yet there are good fats and bad as well. When eating meats focus on lean cuts, and avoid highly saturated fats, and eliminate all transfats.
But some fat sources such as nut oils, olive oils, fish oil etc are actually good and in fact essential to your health. So avoid the nonsense of all carb, or all protein diets.
